Music: Christmas Vespers

The Motor City Brass Quintet

About

The Motor City Brass Quintet features some of Detroit's most creative and versatile brass musicians, including members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Michigan Opera Theatre Orchestra, making the MCBQ an exciting addition to the diverse musical culture of Metropolitan Detroit and across the United States, having recently been named ensemble-in-residence at The Boston University Tanglewood Institute for the summer of 2010.

The quintet's members have performed with many of the finest chamber ensembles including the Empire Brass Quintet, Spectrum Brass, members of the Canadian Brass, and Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and have taught at institutions including the University of Michigan, the University of Toledo, Grand Valley State University, and Albion College. Experienced educators, the MCBQ performs unique, specialized educational programs geared towards children, as well as concerts and presentations for adults in a variety of formats.

The MCBQ’s debut CD, Christmas Vespers, features the premiere complete recording of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison's Christmas Vespers, as well as new arrangements of familiar Christmas and holiday music. Recent premieres include Kevin Beavers’ Three Moods for Brass Quintet (commissioned by the MCBQ in 2009). Detroit Free Press Music Critic Mark Stryker writes of the MCBQ’s “creative vitality” and “seamless and highly musical performances.”
